Last September 2014, Al-Hadid Marine Services (B) Sdn Bhd was commissioned by Tri-Star Shipping and Trading Co. Sdn. Bhd. to assist in the unloading of three new tug boats from a mother vessel berthed at Muara Port of Brunei Darussalam. On hand to do the work was a team of local commercial divers from Al-Hadid Marine Services (B), led by its Managing Director Dk Reda Farizah Ismail. According to Dk Reda, the core business of her company is in commercial diving services, mainly for the oil & gas industry and the shipping industry as well as dams, reservoirs and large community water storage tanks. Commercial diving is different from scuba diving: Scuba diving is recreational and mainly at shallow waters. While commercial diving is more of a skilled profession, and each diver must be accredited to an internationally recognised marine authority, eg International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA). The equipments used are more elaborate and specialized.
Currently Brunei Darussalam has about twenty five local air-divers who have IMCA-recognised accreditation and hopefully a few will graduate to the level of Air Diving Supervisor in the very near future. Most of them have invested personally to undergo the required training programs, at IMCA-approved institutions, e.g. Australian Divers Accreditation Scheme (ADAS) in Australia. Dk Reda further added: “Alhamdulillah, the unloading job went smoothly. I am encouraged of the excellent cooperation rendered to us, from the relevant authorities of Brunei Darussalam like Marine Department, Port Department, Marine Police of the RBPF and the Royal Brunei Navy of the RBAF. Terima kasih semuanya”
